The Commission Process.

The Journey from Concept to Creation

Welcome to my commission process. I offer three types of commissions: pet portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. Each begins uniquely, but shares a common journey thereafter. To the right, you'll find general information applicable to all commissions. Below are specific first steps for each type of commission. Finally, I'll outline the shared steps that bring your vision to life, regardless of the subject. Let's begin our creative journey together.

  • Whether I'm creating a detailed pet portrait, capturing a special landscape, or immortalizing a meaningful still life, I work from a reference photo. The quality of this photo significantly influences the final artwork. While I can sometimes work with less-than-perfect images, a high-quality reference photo allows me to create the most detailed and accurate painting possible.

For pet portraits and landscapes, additional photos can help me capture the character and essence of your subject. For still lifes, extra images of flowers, vases, or other details can be invaluable.

I understand that sometimes only an old or imperfect photo is available, especially for memorials or childhood memories. In these cases, I'll work closely with you to fill in any missing details and bring your vision to life.

    Photography Tips

  • I use only premium materials to ensure your artwork stands the test of time. My canvas of choice is Clairefontaine Pastelmat, which allows for soft, buttery pastel application and superior control in layering, blending, and fine line techniques. This paper's rigidity, weight, and non-acidity, guarantees the longevity of your artwork.

For the initial layers, I use a carefully curated selection of soft pastels, including Unison, Schmincke, Sennelier, and PanPastels, to establish a soft and brilliantly colored underpainting. The finer details are achieved with high-quality pastel pencils from brands such as Stabilo, Faber-Castell Pitt, Caran d'Ache, and Derwent.

My goal is to achieve a smooth, velvet-like finish using lightfast pigments. These pigments maintain their intensity and luminosity for over 50 years, with some lasting up to a century.

  • In the interest of transparency and ensuring your complete satisfaction, I encourage you to review my terms and conditions before proceeding. I'm here to address any questions you may have – your comfort and happiness with the process are my top priorities.

    Terms & Conditions

Commissioning a Pet Portrait

Our animal companions are more than pets; they're family. They're our daily companions, filling our phones with countless photos and our hearts with joy. A pet portrait is a beautiful way to immortalize these beloved friends, capturing their spirit and personality in a timeless piece of art.

To begin, complete the commission submission form below. Indicate whether you prefer a traditional portrait (head and chest with a solid or gradient background) or an illustrated background. For traditional portraits, I offer set commission prices. If you'd like an illustrated background, I'll provide a custom quote based on the complexity of the scene.

Don't worry if you're unsure about the details. I'm happy to discuss options and help you decide what will work best.

Once I receive your submission, I'll respond via email to address any questions and provide an estimated completion time based on my current schedule. If the timeframe works for you, we'll move to the next step.

Commissioning a Landscape

Landscape commissions allow us to capture the essence of places that hold special meaning. Whether it's a sunset from a family vacation, a misty morning by a serene lake, or the fields behind your grandparents' house, these paintings transform cherished memories into timeless artwork.

Please complete the landscape commission submission form below, detailing your vision. This process offers more creative flexibility than a portrait. You can provide a personal photo or describe a meaningful location. If you don't have a specific photo, we can work together to create a composition that captures the essence of your special place.

I'll respond to your submission with questions, composition ideas, and an estimated completion time. If you're happy with the plan, we'll move forward.

Commissioning a Floral Still Life

Floral still life paintings offer a unique way to preserve special moments and memories. Whether it's capturing your wedding bouquet, commemorating a loved one's favorite flowers, or creating a piece that brings year-round joy, these paintings tell powerful stories through carefully arranged blooms.

Complete the still life floral commission submission form, detailing your vision. This process allows for significant creative input.

Don't worry if you're unsure about some details. We can work together to create the perfect composition.

Upon receiving your submission, I'll reach out with follow-up questions, creative suggestions for the composition, and a projected timeline. Once you approve the proposed plan, we'll begin the artistic process.

Completing Your Commission: Next Steps

  • The quality of your reference photos is crucial. I typically work from one main photo for the pose, but additional images can help me capture your pet's personality. Please send high-resolution, clear, and focused images. Avoid low-resolution photos, blurry images, or screenshots.

    Photography Tips

  • I'll create a mock-up based on your chosen reference photo and background, cropped to your selected paper size. This visual aid helps us both envision the final piece.

  • Once you approve the mock-up, I'll send a link to pay a 50% deposit through my website's secure checkout. This secures your place on my commission list.

In the interest of transparency and ensuring your complete satisfaction, I encourage you to review my terms and conditions before proceeding. I'm here to address any questions you may have – your comfort and happiness with the process are my top priorities.

    Terms and Conditions

  • After receiving the final payment (including shipping costs), I'll begin your portrait. The process typically takes 2-3 weeks, depending on size and complexity. Upon completion, I'll email you photos from various angles for your approval. If you'd like any adjustments, I can make minor changes at this stage.

  • Once approved, I'll carefully pack your portrait for its journey. All commissioned paintings are supplied unframed, allowing you the flexibility to choose a frame that complements both the artwork and your home décor.

You'll receive full UPS tracking information to monitor its progress.
